This is going to sound very odd, but has anyone seen my turtle?

Horatio does not appear to be in his tank.

ETA: Uhhh... how precisely are Catseye's clothes appearing and disappearing as she shifts? I just saw her do it, in the hall...

Biochemically-triggered mimetic polycellular fabric. I was bored the other day.

he designed it. I sewed it.

really weird stuff.

It's amazing stuff, thank you. Now I want to see if I can get it to adapt to certain power signatures - make it so that some of the energy-projectors around here don't have to worry about setting their clothes on fire.

it doesn't sew right. it bunches up and doesn't finsih cleanly.

WEIRD.

You cannot see it, but I am giving you the rolling of eyes here. You did fine, it looks okay - and I think that once we figured out how to get it to hold stitching, it could probably be machine-produced. Yet another patent idea to hold on to.

it needs more colors too.

It all makes sense when you start understanding them, I told you:

Biochemically triggered - remember that you sweat a little when you change? Well, there's a hormone in it that the clothing reacts to. Thus-

Mimetic - the structure of the material has a sort of memory. It's why it can go from collar to clothing so fast.

Polycellular - what it's made of. Feels like silk, wears like cotton, but it's one solid piece instead of a weave.

Really, Catseye. I swear you'll have a head for science one of these days.

That is... absolutely fascinating. Once we've corralled my turtle, tell me more about it?

Huh. The applications...

It's nothing that amazing, really. When you think about it, most textiles have a default state - all it took was convincing the material to hold two "defaults", and accept a biochemical trigger to shift between them. The fact that the stuff doesn't wrinkle was an unexpected side effect.

Yes, well, I don't know that you started out not being able to use your powers without winding up naked....

You're a metamorph as well, right. If Clarice is amenable, I think we could probably fix something up that would work.

It did prompt me to learn to stop in the middle, which has been very useful, and I don't strictly need it... I'm not saying it's not a marvelous idea; I just don't want to be any trouble.

Oh, think nothing of it. I wouldn't make stuff if it didn't have a purpose. And Clarice was saying that we need to see if it can be made in other colors.

If you're sure, thank you very much -- and if Clarice winds up too busy, I can sew.

...What color is it currently? I've had my nose to the ground mostly and transforming does things to my colour vision that I didn't stop to translate when I did see her.

(Of course, I could go look now....)

of course I am!

but I'm telling you, color. not this dull gray stuff.

Oh, didn't see this comment when I asked.

Grey isn't a bad color though....

but wouldn't a light blue be better? or green?

or POLKADOTS!

Maybe darker blue or green?

Not polkadots.

And I'm going to get a sample at some point, aren't I? When my students do something exceptionally clever, I do like to see it.
