Driving Home

I don't often play country or folk music, but Jean had a soft spot for Cheryl Wheeler since she saw her in concert. And I thought it appropriate for music following Jamie's first driving foray onto something other than farm and rural roads.

He did rather well, all things considered. The traffic was pretty bad for a Saturday afternoon, with the weather so beautiful a lot of people decided to spend the day out of doors. I thought him capable enough to handle one of the school's trucks, since he'd driven one similar to it at home. Standards can be a trial with which to start learning to drive (at least "officially starting to learn to drive"), but I thought the familarity might be better. He handles the clutch very well, but I would imagine it's because he's had more experience with standards than most new drivers. The constant stop-and-go traffic was just awful, but I only saw a few moments of panic in his eyes, and told him to take side roads as soon as he could.

I'd imagine that it will only be a few more lessons, with highway driving, before he's ready to take the test.

Well done, Jamie. If you can't find me the next time you have time to practice, find Ms. Blaire. She's willing to help.

Thanks, Mr. Summers. It was more traffic than I'm used to, but Dad always said that just meant you had to pay more attention.

I've actually got more experience with a stick than an automatic--Mom's car is an automatic, but I did most of my driving in Dad's pickup, running errands for the farm and stuff.

Highway driving, huh? Well, that'll be . . . different.
